Auto Fluff - ASR - PBDE's - Toxic YES!

Please note :This is what a scap metal pile could look like.In this picture you can see a dumpster and even a Waste Management garbage roll off (truck) bed.

Recycling saves energy and natural resources, but it is essential that the process of resource recovery not leave a toxic hot spot for the next generation here in Wawayanda to clean up.
Today the majority of auto manufacturers have not adopted clean production strategies to eliminate all toxic's from the cars they make and the future does not look like they will doing that anytime soon(exception Saturn who is currently trying to make their cars 98% recyclable).

In the US we dismantle and scrape some where around 10 million cars each year.
Approximately 65 to 75 % of the cars and other valuable ferrous metals are recovered and recycled into new products.
The remaining 25-35% of the nor - ferrous residue is called "auto shredder residue"(ASR) and known in the auto recycling business as auto fluff.

Each year there is between 5-6 million tons of "fluff" that has to be buried in landfills or incinerated.

Is Auto Fluff a Hazardous Waste?

The auto industry and the maintenance of vehicles all use hazardous chemicals. There has been extensive reviews by many on ASR.

One study which was done by the Ecology Center in Michigan found several toxic contaminants in auto fluff.

Additionally, the US EPA and several European Environmental Agencies have reported that "fluff" contain high levels of mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, polyvinyl chloride, chromium and PCB's.

Several States do consider auto fluff a hazardous waste requiring special disposal.

Then there is the problem with Auto Fluff Fires...to be further discussed in a future article on health and safety.

Place a call to Supervisor Razzano,Councilman Dave Cole and Dick Penaluna and ask them these three simple questions:

1. Do you think Wawayanda needs a Auto Shredding & metal recycling center here in our town?
~

2.Why do you think we need such heavy industry in Wawayanda?
~

3.Will the Town of Wawayanda site a landfill to go along with the auto junk yard and it's residue?
